There are many interest inventories to use. They ask questions about things that a student may find interesting and compile these into a taxomony which will point to a 'personality type' or to career paths. Many are available on the web. These web-based products are for the most part free of charge.

Here are the links to some tests. You may find more by searching the web.

  • O*Net Career Exploration Tools
      The Occupational Information Network, the nation's primary source of occupational information, has developed a set of self-directed career exploration/assessment tools to help students and workers consider and plan career options. Users of the tools may link to the more than 900 occupations described by the O*NET database.
  • Kingdomality
      Career Management International's (CMI) "Kingdomality" Personal Preference Profile is a fun way to gain a broader understanding of the basic complementary personality styles and types that help determine each individual's vocational interests.
  • Career Key
      The Career Key (CK) is designed to help youth and adults become more self-reliant and competent in their career exploration and decision making. The CK allows users to relate their Holland personality type to groups of occupations where the traits of the workers are similar with respect to interests, aptitudes, temperament, skills, and abilities.
  • The Princeton Review Career Quiz
      A 24-question quiz that asks easy stuff about you, and then analyzes your answers to determine your most likely interests and work style. With this information, you'll be guided to careers that would likely suit you--and, more importantly, that you'd enjoy!
  • The Career Development eManual
      This is a a complete manual for career development published by Career Services, University of Waterloo Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
  • The Kiersey Personality Sorter
      This is a fun personality sorter. Based on 20 years of testing and publication this is a good place to compare how a person's interests categorize them.
  • Discover Your Work
      A site put up by the military that includes the Interest Finder Quiz and the Work Interest Quiz. The site also promotes the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery.
  • The Jackson Vocational Interest Survey
      The Jackson Vocational Interest Survey is an online career planning tool. The JVIS profile describes areas of career activity in which the user has indicated a high interest. The scores are compared with those of a variety of students and with people in different job groups. The JVIS Extended Report and the Career Exploration Guide may be used, together with other information about interests and abilities, in making educational and career decisions. The JVIS is not free.
